of sin and sinners

"Just as a mirror is not bad because it shows an ugly person what he looks like, and just as a physician is not bad because he tells a sick person he has a fever - for the physician is not the cause of the fever but is only the one who exposes it - so the one who exposes the soul [in this context, this is God] is not ill-disposed to the one who is sick in his soul. For he does not trespass into a person, but he exposes the sins that are present so that they may be corrected." - Clement of Alexandria, about 195 A.D.
