eternal life in John's Gospel

Eternal life is the blessing that comes to believers, disciples of Jesus Christ
"For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. . . . Very truly I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life." (John 6:40,47)
Eternal life comes to disciples as a gracious, glorious gift
"Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. . . . Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. . . . “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." (John 6:27; 4:13-14; 17:1-3)
Eternal life is a disciple's present possession
". . . everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. . . . Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. . . . Even now those who reap draw their wages, even now they harvest the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together." (John 3:15-16,36; 4:36)
Eternal life offers disciples helpful hope
“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. . . . Those who love their life will lose it, while those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life." (John 5:24; 12:25)
Eternal life gives disciples clear confidence
"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. . . . I know that his command leads to eternal life." (John 10:28; 12:50a)
Eternal life comes to disciples from Jesus
"You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you possess eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. . . . Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. . . . Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to who else could we go? You have the words of eternal life." (John 5:39-40; 6:54,68)
