why temptation is allowed

"It is said that there are five reasons why God allows the demons to wage war against us. The first is so that, through fighting and resisting, we might come to the discernment of virtue and vice. The second is so that, through warfare and labor, we might obtain virtue and possess it firmly and unchangeably. The third is so that not become so proud as we progress toward virtue, but learn humility. The fourth is so that when we are tempted by evil we may hate it with a hatred made perfect. The fifth and principal cause is so that as we become free of passions we will forget neither the weakness that is common to humanity nor the power of the One who helps us." - Maximus the Confessor (@630 A.D.)
